Communication creates shared understanding among people //grounding (shared understanding) is necessary for communication
Graphic design doesn’t always need to be a quest for new / never seen that before
Design
- assumes its audience has a previous understanding of its vocabulary.
- conveys information based on the audience and its understanding.
- Denotation (seeing)
- Connotation (interpreting)
CONCEPTS // ideas in context // how you are visualizing the idea
they are bearers of meaning as opposed to agents of meaning // one concept can be expressed by any number of languages (ex. The concept of a dog can be expressed in many languages but they all represent the same thing)
Because concepts are independent of language makes multiple translations possible
{ ways to transform images to visual ideas }
alteration
This book is about a fictional man Zeno and its full of his memoirs that he keeps at the insistence of his psychiatrist. Because the name of the book "Zeno's Conscience" could go either way (praising his conscious or saying he is crazy) the scribbles over the mans face indicate instantly the man is crazy.
exaggeration
combination
analogy metaphor similie used to draw attention to similarities and parallels between different things
similie // one thing is like another "like" or "as"
metaphor // speak figuratively to describe something; to speak as if one thing is another thing
pun // play on words
this book "Breaking into Print" contains writers and their "breakthrough" writing. The collection of their breakthroughs in their careers is shown literally by the book being broken into.
analogy // used when we are trying to explain something complex by using something familiar
in this bookcover they are comparing the feeling of something valuable being taken (painting stolen from a museum) to having someone being taken from you in a relationship sense.
separation : type ignoring convention of reading left to right top to bottom
fusion : image working with type
fragmentation : image being displaced by type
inversion : type as image
